Degree requirements


Degrees available in European Ethnology are Bachelor of Arts (HuK) and Master of Arts (FM).

Studies in European Ethnology take place through the media of tutorials, seminars, excursions and supervised individual work. Students also take part in field-work training.

European Ethnology annually accepts twelve new students into the major. Anyone who is interested can take it as a minor subject. Students wishing to minor in Ethnology should enroll at the office at the beginning of the academic year.

The language of tuition is Finnish. Basic knowledge of Swedish and English are strongly recommended. In lieu of Finnish, it is possible for our international students to write their master’s theses in English or Swedish.


Baltic Sea Region Studies

Ethnology participates in the Baltic Sea Region Studies program (BSRS) which is a multidisciplinary program co-ordinated by the Faculty of Humanities of Turku University. The language of tuition is English.
