ISCH 2010 CONFERENCE
Cultural Histories: Close Readings, Critical Syntheses
Turku, May 26th to 30th, 2010 CFP now!
Welcome to Cultural History!
Department of Cultural History in the University of Turku is one of the oldest in Europe to offer a full academic degree in Cultural History. Cultural History can be studied as a major subject in the BA, MA and PhD degrees.
Cultural History studied and researched in Turku covers the history of Western civilisation from Antiquity until the present day, emphasising historical and holistic perspectives. Cultural History examines people's habits, activities and the plans according to which they have constructed their lives and interacted with their environment. Thus, the studies do not focus on high culture, but equal importance is given to studying the history of everyday life, of different mentalities and popular cultures. The subject aims at providing students with an understanding of the interrelations between different domains of culture and thus to construct an overall picture of the past and of different historical periods. Cultural History should not, then, be seen as constituting distinct cultural sciences. Rather, it integrates the different fields of culture in a temporal dimension.
Cultural History may be taken as a major or minor subject. Students with Cultural History as their major subject may also earn a degree for teaching history in secondary schools and in high schools.
The main emphases of international activities of Cultural History are:
1. to create networks of research and
2. to develope and promote history e-learning
