Research
The Department's research is characterised by its range of topics. A central element in our activities is to discuss, both in empirical research and theoretical debates, how culture as the object of our research can be analysed. Strong areas of research in the department include medieval and early modern culture and cultural history of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We have particular strengths in the history of media and popular culture, studies of space and material culture, and gender history. Important areas are also the cultural history of knowledge and thinking, and of experience and emotions.
Research students and the research community
The Department has around 40 research students working on PhDs. Some of them work part-time and others are full-time. Many of the full time research students work at the department and participate in teaching and other academic endeavors including organising conferences.
