Finno-Ugric Languages as a discipline introduces the student to the structure and history of the Finno-Ugric languages and gives the student elementary knowledge of the principal languages of our language group. Finno-Ugric Languages is a research-orientated discipline. Studying Finno-Ugric Languages or Finnish Language at the University of Turku gives the student equal qualifications to become a Finnish language and literature teacher in primary, secondary or high school. Studies in Finno-Ugric Languages also prepare the student for work in individual research and in the cultural sector. Because of the Department’s international contacts, studying Finno-Ugric Languages offers opportunities in gaining experience in intercultural communication. Nowadays, one of the most important employers of the graduates of the Department is teaching Finnish language for foreigners.
