Art History at the University of Turku

The chair of Art History was instituted at the University of Turku in 1987. It is one of the six academic art studies disciplines at the School of History, Culture and Arts Studies.

The aim of Art History is to give the student skills in analysing and interpreting visual culture and the built environment from both a historical and a contemporary perspective. Students can choose their special interest from areas such as the visual arts, architecture, design, photography, media art, or urban design. Art or architectural criticism, museums, and the art market are examples of institutions which can form frames of reference for student work.

Art History at the University of Turku does not give professional training or professional diplomas to artists or architects. It aims to train students for research and for various interpretative tasks in the above mentioned fields. Graduates have found careers in museums, architectural research and conservation, public administration, art organisations, the media, and teaching and research.

The research and teaching in Art History at the University of Turku is focused mainly on Finnish art and architecture.

All lectures in Art History are in Finnish (except the course "Baltic Sea Region in Art History"). Exams and essays can, however, be written in English.

Studies in Art History consists of following modules:

  • Perusopinnot - Basic Studies
  • Aineopinnot - Intermediate Studies
  • Syventävät opinnot - Advanced Studies
  • Pro Gradu -tutkielma - Master's Thesis
