University Teacher, Ph.D., docent Tiina Mahlamäki
I work as a university teacher in the department of Comparative Religion. In addition to lecturing and seminary teaching I also council students in their studies and thesis, receive the exams and give lectures in the Open University. I’m also responsible for the data archive of folkloristics and comparative religion.
My dissertation Naisia kansalaisuuden kynnyksellä. Eeva Joenpellon Lohja-sarjan tulkinta [Women on the threshold of nationhood. An interpretation of the Lohja series by Eeva Joenpelto] 2005, was an interdisciplinary research, connecting the methods and theories of comparative religion, literary critics and women’s studies. In the dissertation I explored the ways female citizenship is manifested in literature. The biography of Eeva Joenpelto was published in 2009.
My post-doc research is also focusing on the questions conserning religion, nationality/citizenship and literature. I'm tracing the presence and impact of Swedish scientist and visionary Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) from the published and unpublished writings of the 19th century national authors of Finland, especially, J.V. Snellman, J. L. Runeberg, Zacharias Topelius, Aleksis Kivi and Minna Canth.
My common research interests are: religion and literature, religion and nationalism, civil religion, religion and gender, and contemporary religiousity in Finland.
