In the University of Turku, Russian language can be studied either as a major or a minor subject. The courses of study focus on the following areas: practical knowledge of spoken and written Russian, linguistics, Russian literature, Russian history and contemporary life. 
   

The University of Turku is closely cooperating with the Swedish-speaking university in the town, Åbo Akademi, and also in Russian the study programmes are open for the students of both universities. The emphasis in Åbo Akademi is in Russian Literature, while in the University of Turku in Russian Linguistics. The main fields of research are contemporary Russian lexicology and stylistics, especially language in the changing society, language and politics.

The Department of Russian Studies is a part of the School of Language and Translation Studies. The staff of the Department of Russian Studies consists of a professor, a Finnish lecturer and a native Russian lecturer.
