Studying Russian Language
The Department of Russian Studies aims to provide students with the competence to operate in situations requiring an excellent knowledge of the Russian language and culture. In addition to developing language skills, the discipline aims at providing a knowledge of the rules and development of the language, and of Russian literature, history and modern life. Students are expected to develop their practical language skills independently.
One of Finland's assets as a member of the European Union is the knowledge of Russia and her culture. There is a growing need for experts in the Russian language and culture in business, administration and cultural institutions as well as for traditional teaching and research tasks. Thus, it makes sense to combine Russia with, for example, other languages, historical and cultural subjects, social sciences or the law.
Languages of tuition are Finnish and Russian. Most of the study materials are in Russian. In order to take part to the classes, students are supposed to have basic Russian language skills (equivalent of approximately three years of Russian language studies at school). Part of the courses may be studied independently by taking exams or by written assignments which can be performed also in English. Basic studies and intermediate studies are usually taken during the first three years of study and advanced studies during the fourth and fifth year.
